An extensive search operation continues along the East Yorkshire coastline for a 15-year-old girl who was swept into the sea, in a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two people who tried to rescue her.
How the Withernsea Tragedy Unfolded
Grace Keeling, aged 15, remains missing after being caught by a wave near rocks in Withernsea on Friday afternoon. Emergency services were alerted to concerns for people in the water at around 3.15pm on 6 January 2026.
Humberside Police, after reviewing CCTV and witness accounts, believe Grace was on steps near the rocks with a friend when she fell into the water. Her mother, 45-year-old Sarah Keeling, and three other members of the public immediately entered the sea in a desperate attempt to save her.
Desperate Rescue Attempt and Fatal Consequences
Among those who rushed to help was 67-year-old Mark Ratcliffe. Despite the swift response from emergency teams, including HM Coastguard and Humberside Fire and Rescue, the conditions proved fatal.
Mr Ratcliffe was recovered from the water unconscious and, despite medical efforts, was pronounced dead at the scene. The body of Sarah Keeling was found by HM Coastguard later that same evening.
Two other men who entered the water managed to get out safely.
Large-Scale Search Operation for Missing Teen
Chief Inspector Tom Stevens stated that finding Grace is now the absolute priority. Specialist teams are conducting an intensive search, which includes:
- Detailed shoreline searches from Withernsea to Easington.
- Drone surveys of the coastal area.
- The deployment of an underwater search unit.
An oceanographer has also been consulted to guide the efforts and ensure they are as effective as possible. The public has been asked to avoid the area to allow emergency teams to work without hindrance.
Inspector Stevens described the event as "a truly tragic incident" and confirmed that specially trained officers are supporting both families involved. He also extended thanks to the public and partner agencies for their invaluable assistance in the ongoing search for Grace Keeling.
