Three teenage boys have been hospitalised with potentially serious injuries after falling from the top deck of a double-decker school bus in Manchester.
Emergency Response on Bolton Road
The incident occurred on Bolton Road in Manchester on Thursday, 8 January 2026. Emergency services, including an air ambulance which landed nearby, rushed to the scene following reports that three high school pupils had fallen through a window on the top deck of the bus.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the details, stating the boys were pupils from the nearby St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School. The road was temporarily closed for initial enquiries but has since reopened.
School and Police Response
In a letter sent to parents on the day of the incident, headteacher Mark Dumican sought to reassure the school community. He stated there were no life-threatening injuries and confirmed all three boys were being assessed in hospital.
"The pupils attend our school, and we are in contact with the families to offer our support," Mr Dumican wrote. "We are also offering support to those pupils in school today who witnessed the incident... Contrary to some reports, there are no life-threatening injuries."
GMP Inspector Simon Barrie described it as a serious incident but indicated early signs pointed to a tragic accident. "Our priority is to make sure the children get the treatment they need in the hospital," he said. "Thankfully, we don't believe their injuries are life-threatening. This does appear to be an unfortunate accident at this time, but we will be making enquiries as to the circumstances."
Ongoing Enquiries and Support
An investigation into the precise circumstances is now underway, with police liaising with partners. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) also issued a statement.
A TfGM spokesperson said: "We understand that three children onboard have since been taken to the hospital. Our thoughts are with those injured, and we want to wish them a speedy recovery. Emergency services remain at the scene, and we are working closely with the bus operator in supporting police with their enquiries."
The focus for the school remains on providing pastoral care to students affected by the shocking event, while authorities work to establish exactly how the boys came to fall from the moving vehicle.
