Woman Rescued from Peckham Blaze as Open Fire Ignites Home
Woman rescued from burning South London home

A dramatic rescue unfolded in South London after a woman was trapped inside her burning home, forcing firefighters to use a ladder to save her.

Dramatic Ladder Rescue in Early Morning Blaze

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, January 11, at a two-storey terraced house on Sturdy Road in Peckham. The London Fire Brigade received the first emergency call at 7.45am, prompting an immediate response.

Upon arrival, crews discovered that half of the ground floor was already alight and severely damaged. With the fire ripping through the property, a woman was found trapped on the first floor. Firefighters from New Cross, Peckham, and Old Kent Road fire stations swiftly deployed a nine-metre ladder to reach her at the window and bring her to safety.

Swift Response and On-Scene Treatment

A total of three fire engines and approximately 15 firefighters worked to bring the intense blaze under control. The fire was mostly extinguished by 8.22am, less than 40 minutes after the initial call.

The rescued woman received immediate medical attention at the scene from the London Ambulance Service (LAS). She was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation following her ordeal.

Accidental Cause and Critical Safety Warning

The brigade has confirmed the fire is being treated as accidental. It was caused when floorboards caught alight from an open fire within the home.

In light of the incident, the London Fire Brigade has reiterated vital safety guidance for those using log burners or open fires. A spokesperson urged the public to take preventative steps, stating: “Firefighters recommend that you have a look at our online Home Fire Safety Checker to make sure there are no hidden hazards in your home.”

The online tool provides a personalised risk assessment and takes just minutes to complete.

The brigade issued a clear list of essential safety measures to prevent similar tragedies:

  • Always use a fireguard to contain sparks and hot embers.
  • Ensure a fire is completely under control before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Keep children, pets, clothing, and flammable fabrics well away from the heat source.
  • Maintain chimneys and flues properly, having them swept by a certified specialist at least once a year for coal, or twice for wood.
  • Store logs at a safe distance from burners, as radiated heat can cause them to ignite.
