While these devices are marketed for anti-ageing, the evidence supporting their effectiveness in preventing wrinkles remains limited, according to skincare experts.

Professional Insights on Skin Benefits

Afshin Mosahebi, a professor of plastic surgery at University College London, notes that red light therapy has established benefits for certain skin conditions. "Reasonable reports show that the treatment is good for wound-healing," he explains. This makes it suitable for inflammatory issues like acne, dermatitis, and psoriasis, as it enhances circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes cell regeneration.

The Anti-Ageing Debate

When it comes to wrinkle prevention, the scientific backing is less robust. Mosahebi describes the theory behind it: "One of the things we know that happens as we age is the fibroblast cells become a little bit sleepy. The theory is the light will stimulate them into action to produce collagen, which is something we need for thicker, plumper, less wrinkly skin." However, he emphasises that there is no substantial evidence to confirm this effect. If it does work, professional treatments are likely more effective due to their higher intensity compared to at-home masks.

Long-Term Safety Concerns

Mosahebi also raises concerns about the lack of research on repeated, long-term use of red light therapy, which manufacturers often encourage with these masks. "We don't know what happens when people use it in the long term. We don't know if it actually causes more aged skin because light is the main cause of ageing, or whether it has any effect on skin cancer," he warns. While he believes the therapy is generally safe, the unknowns highlight the need for caution.

Alternative Approaches to Ageing Skin

For those seeking to delay wrinkles, Mosahebi recommends focusing on proven lifestyle factors over expensive gadgets. He advises:

  • Maintaining a nutritious diet
  • Drinking sufficient water
  • Exercising regularly
  • Using a nourishing moisturiser
  • Applying high-protection sunscreen daily

He concludes that without these foundational practices, investing in a red light therapy mask may not be worthwhile, as the benefits for anti-ageing remain unproven and overshadowed by potential risks from long-term exposure.
