Shocking video footage has emerged from a hospital in northern India, showing a doctor allegedly physically assaulting a patient who had requested to be spoken to with respect. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked outrage and prompted official investigations.
The Confrontation in the Ward
The altercation took place at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla. The patient, Arjun Panwar, was at the hospital for medical tests. After undergoing a bronchoscopy, a procedure to examine the lungs, he experienced breathing difficulties and lay down on a bed in a ward.
Mr Panwar stated that when he asked for oxygen, the doctor questioned his admission status and began speaking to him in a rude tone without provocation. "I requested that he speak to me with respect but he became confrontational," the victim explained. The situation escalated when Mr Panwar asked the medic if he spoke to his own family in such a manner, to which the doctor reportedly claimed the patient was getting "personal".
Violent Outburst Captured on Video
The ensuing argument allegedly turned violent. Disturbing footage from the scene shows the doctor wrestling with Mr Panwar over what appears to be a walking aid as the victim lies defenceless on the bed. The medic is then seen throwing punches at the patient.
Witnesses attempted to intervene, but the video shows the doctor moving to the other side of the bed and allegedly assaulting Mr Panwar several more times before being pulled away by another man. Throughout the incident, Mr Panwar is seen kicking out in an attempt to protect himself.
"I had just undergone a bronchoscopy and was struggling to breathe," Mr Panwar said, describing his vulnerable state during the attack.
Aftermath and Official Response
The incident provoked immediate backlash. A large crowd gathered at the hospital demanding action against the accused doctor. In response, the hospital administration has established a three-person inquiry committee to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Dr Rahul Rao, the medical superintendent of IGMC Shimla, confirmed that the committee will submit its report imminently. He also stated that a formal report against the doctor has been filed with the police, who are now investigating the assault allegations.
This case has raised serious questions about medical conduct and patient safety, highlighting the critical importance of respect and professionalism in healthcare settings.
