A South London man who tragically lost his brother to suicide has created an innovative online platform that enables strangers to write anonymous letters of support for those struggling with their mental health. In just two weeks since its launch, the initiative has facilitated the sending of more than 600,000 heartfelt messages.
Turning Personal Tragedy into a Lifeline for Others
Ben West, a 25-year-old mental health advocate from Tooting, South London, established the platform called Reasons to Stay on January 21, 2026. This date marked the eighth anniversary of his younger brother Sam's death by suicide at just 15 years old. Ben discovered Sam unconscious in his room when he was 17 and performed CPR in a desperate attempt to save him, but tragically his brother passed away.
Ben described the world after his brother's death as becoming "incredibly painful" and said losing Sam was his first experience of profound grief. "I was in complete shock and devastation, it was like a bomb went off in my life," he recalled. Since that tragic day, Ben has dedicated himself to mental health advocacy, determined to prevent similar tragedies.
Creating Connection in a Time of Growing Isolation
The Reasons to Stay platform addresses what Ben identifies as critical issues in contemporary society: growing isolation, social disconnection, and lack of purpose. "There is a growing demand for a site like this; it feels like more and more people require some level of support," Ben explained. "These are things that can drive people to take their own lives."
He further noted the healthcare system's limitations, stating: "We have a problem with health care capacity that can't reach demand, and there are a lot of people who care about this issue. I always thought it would be great to connect those people who care with the people who want to be cared for."
Remembering Sam: A Talented Brother Lost Too Soon
Ben fondly remembered his brother as "incredibly talented" with an "amazing sense of humour" who loved music and art. "He was really funny, he had an amazing sense of humour, a bit of a class clown occasionally - he was a really great person," Ben shared. Sam had been diagnosed with clinical depression in September 2017, just days before his 16th birthday.
"As his brother, you look back, he would have gone on to be an impressive person who goes on to do some interesting things in life," Ben reflected. "It is bittersweet that someone so talented, so liked, who was such a gift to the world, had an illness that made life seem so dark to him."
How the Platform Works
The Reasons to Stay website features a simple online form where visitors can compose and submit anonymous letters of support. Each submission undergoes careful assessment by a specialist clinical moderation team before being published on the platform. This ensures all content remains appropriate and supportive for those who might be experiencing mental health difficulties.
Ben designed the platform with his brother in mind: "I designed this page, so if there was any hope left for Sam, he could go onto the website and find a reason to stay. The letters remind you of what is important in life. We get swept away, but then you read one of these letters talking about loving yourself and loving the people around you."
Overwhelming Response Exceeds All Expectations
When Ben launched Reasons to Stay, he set himself a modest initial goal of collecting 100 letters within the first week. The response has been nothing short of remarkable - instead of 100 letters, the platform received 9,000 submissions in that first week alone. Within just two weeks, the initiative has facilitated the delivery of over 600,000 letters.
"It is a powerful reminder of what matters in life," Ben said of the letters. "What matters is valuing who you are, what makes you unique and those around you that make you feel loved."
A Legacy of Hope and Connection
Ben expressed his hope that the platform could have made a difference for his brother: "I would love nothing more than to go back in time and put this in the hands of Sam. Then Sam would be the person talking to you now and campaigning for better mental health support."
Reflecting on the platform's impact, Ben added: "Looking back, it would have been so huge if someone could have done something so simple to help Sam. It is hard to imagine that someone hasn't been impacted positively by these letters. That makes me smile. I haven't stopped smiling since the launch."
The overwhelming response to Reasons to Stay demonstrates both the profound need for mental health support and the willingness of strangers to offer compassion and connection to those who may be struggling. Ben West's initiative has created a digital space where empathy bridges the gap between isolation and community, potentially saving lives through simple acts of written kindness.
