Join Metro's 2026 Lifeline Challenge: Hike the Cotswolds to Fight Dementia
Hike the Cotswolds in 2026 to Support Dementia Charity

A sobering new statistic reveals the scale of the dementia crisis in the UK: someone develops the condition every three minutes. Furthermore, one in three people born in the UK today will be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime. In response, Metro.co.uk is launching its 2026 Lifeline campaign, calling on readers to take action and raise crucial funds for the Alzheimer's Society.

The Lifeline Challenge: A Scenic Trek for a Vital Cause

This summer, Metro is organising an epic fundraising hike through the stunning Cotswolds countryside. The event, set for Saturday, 13 June 2026, offers participants a chance to push their limits while supporting a critical cause. To ensure inclusivity, walkers can choose from three distances: 25km, 50km, or 100km. The Cotswolds, now a protected National Landscape, provides a beautiful and accessible backdrop, under an hour by train from London.

Registration starts at just £15, with fundraising targets set at £150 for the 25km route, £225 for 50km, and £330 for the 100km challenge. Every pound raised will go directly to the Alzheimer's Society, a charity at the forefront of supporting the approximately one million people living with dementia in the UK.

Comprehensive Support from Start to Finish

Organised by ultra event specialists Action Challenge, participants receive extensive support. Upon signing up, trekkers gain access to a dedicated Challenge App featuring training guides, practice walk information, maps, and forums. A Team Lifeline Facebook page fosters community, allowing walkers to share tips and ask questions.

On the route, fully-equipped rest stops await every 12.5km, offering far more than just water. Participants will find:

  • Welfare tents and catering services.
  • Professional massages and seating areas.
  • A wide selection of free snacks, drinks, and full meals.
  • Options to camp, with inclusive packages available.

A new GPS tracking system lets walkers share their location in real-time without draining their phone battery. Completing the challenge rewards participants with a medal, a T-shirt, and a celebratory glass of fizz.

Why Your Support Matters More Than Ever

Michelle Dyson CB, Chief Executive Officer at Alzheimer's Society, emphasised the campaign's importance. "Dementia is the UK's biggest killer," she stated. "A third of those living with it do not have a formal diagnosis, meaning they face its devastating realities without access to vital care, support, and treatment."

She added: "The Lifeline campaign will play a transformative role... The funds raised will go directly to Alzheimer’s Society’s support services and make an instrumental difference to the lives of thousands. It will take a society to beat dementia, and working in partnership with Metro will help bring us closer to a day where dementia no longer devastates lives."

With its combination of a beautiful setting, flexible challenge levels, and full organisational support, the Metro Lifeline Challenge offers a perfect opportunity for anyone seeking a meaningful and achievable goal for 2026. By joining Team Lifeline, you can ensure that no one has to face dementia alone.
