Serial Predator Vincent Chan Awaits Sentencing After Pleading Guilty to 56 Offences
Vincent Chan, a 45-year-old from Finchley in north London, is set to be sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, February 12, after admitting to 56 charges related to sexual abuse and exploitation of children and women. The prolific sex abuser and paedophile systematically used his employment at educational institutions to carry out his crimes over many years.
Exploitation of Positions of Trust in Schools and Nurseries
Chan began working at a school in 2007, where he engaged in upskirting female students and took obscene photographs of himself inside a classroom. He later secured a position at a nursery, remaining employed there for nearly seven years until his arrest. During this time, he filmed himself abusing four young children at a now-closed Bright Horizons branch in West Hampstead, north London.
Discovery of Crimes Through Edited Video
His offences came to light when he showed a colleague a video he had edited to music, depicting a child falling asleep in their food. The colleague immediately reported Chan and the video to management, prompting the Metropolitan Police to arrest him on suspicion of child cruelty. This initial report triggered a comprehensive investigation led by Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford.
Extensive Evidence Uncovered on Personal Devices
Following his arrest on June 11, 2024, police seized 69 personal devices from Chan. Analysis of these devices revealed thousands of images and videos documenting his abuse of women and girls over an extended period. The evidence indicated that his offending predated the charges to which he eventually pleaded guilty.
Guilty Pleas to Multiple Charges
In December, Chan appeared at Wood Green Crown Court and pleaded guilty to 26 charges, including:
- Five counts of sexual assault by penetration
- Four counts of sexual assault by touching
- Eleven counts of taking indecent images of children
- Six counts of making indecent images of children
In January, he admitted an additional 30 charges, comprising:
- Twelve counts of taking indecent photographs of children
- Six counts of outraging public decency
- One count of sexual assault on a female
- Eleven counts of voyeurism
Police Condemnation and Community Impact
Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, who led the investigation, described Chan as an "abhorrent predator" and a "dangerous and predatory individual." Basford emphasised that Chan deliberately sought positions of trust involving contact with young girls to facilitate his crimes unchecked for years. The detective also highlighted Chan's exploitation of trust, branding him a danger to all girls and women.
Basford thanked the community for their cooperation throughout the investigation and reaffirmed the police's commitment to supporting victims and their families. The Met Police is collaborating closely with the NSPCC to ensure affected families receive necessary assistance.
Legal Repercussions for Bright Horizons Nursery
Bright Horizons West Hampstead, the childcare facility that employed Chan, now faces legal action from a group of families whose children attended the nursery. This development underscores the broader institutional accountability concerns arising from Chan's prolonged abuse.
