Measles Outbreak Strikes North East London Schools: Parents Alerted to Symptoms
Health officials have issued a stark warning to parents in North East London as a measles outbreak has led to more than 60 confirmed cases among schoolchildren and nursery attendees. The UK Health Security Agency reported these infections occurring between January 1 and February 9, 2026, with some children requiring hospital treatment due to the severity of the illness.
Symptoms to Watch For in Children
Measles typically begins with symptoms resembling a cold, including a high temperature, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, and red, watery eyes. As the disease progresses, small white spots may appear on the inside of the cheeks and back of the lips. This is often followed by a distinctive red or brown rash that starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading across the body.
The outbreak is primarily affecting unvaccinated children under the age of 10, highlighting the critical importance of immunization. Health authorities are particularly concerned about the upcoming Easter holidays, as travel abroad could introduce additional cases from countries experiencing their own measles outbreaks.
Vaccination Recommendations and Precautions
To combat the spread, the NHS is offering the new MMRV vaccine for young children, while the traditional MMR vaccine remains recommended for older children and adults. Parents are urged to ensure their children's vaccinations are up to date, especially before any overseas travel.
