A woman has tragically died from injuries sustained in a major fire that engulfed a sheltered housing complex in West London last week.
Timeline of a Tragedy
The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, at the Meadowcroft supported living accommodation on Brooks Road in Chiswick. London Fire Brigade (LFB) received the call shortly after 4.20pm and crews arrived at the scene within three minutes.
Firefighters were confronted with a "challenging and well-developed fire" that had ripped through a first-floor flat before spreading into the corridor. They rescued a woman from the property, who was then taken to hospital by paramedics with serious injuries. She sadly succumbed to her injuries four days later, on Tuesday, January 13.
Major Emergency Response
At the height of the incident, ten fire engines and 70 firefighters from stations including Chiswick, Acton, and Mitcham were in attendance. They used specialist fire escape hoods to rescue four other people from neighbouring flats.
These individuals were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, suffering from smoke inhalation. The blaze was finally brought under control by 6.05pm on the same evening.
Investigation and Community Support
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the authorities. Assistant Commissioner Andy Pennick of the London Fire Brigade confirmed that the Brigade was initially alerted by an automatic fire alarm. The first 999 call confirming an actual fire was not received until crews were already on the scene.
In the aftermath, LFB worked with local partners to support the evacuated residents, many of whom are elderly or vulnerable. An immediate rest centre was established for approximately 30 residents who had to leave the building.
Assistant Commissioner Pennick stated: "Our thoughts are with the woman's family and friends as well as all those impacted by this sad incident." He also emphasised the critical role of working smoke alarms, noting they enabled the rapid response that prevented further tragedy and significant fire spread.
