DWP issues travel warning for PIP claimants planning summer holidays abroad
DWP travel warning for PIP claimants in July and August

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued guidance for claimants planning summer holidays, particularly those receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP). While most holidaymakers need not worry, anyone planning a trip lasting more than four weeks must take note of specific rules.

Most Brits book their summer holidays for July and August, heading to popular destinations like Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece. However, PIP recipients must follow certain rules when travelling outside the UK. They are required to report any changes to their personal circumstances to the DWP, including moving house, updated care needs, or changes in their country of residence. Crucially, if you plan to stay abroad for longer than four weeks, you must inform the DWP.

Failure to update the DWP with travel arrangements could result in benefit entitlement being paused or stopped altogether. The department warns that if you leave the country for more than four weeks, even for a holiday, you must provide your departure and return dates. The GOV.UK website specifies that you must contact the PIP enquiry line "straight away" if planning to go abroad for longer than four weeks.

If you are arranging overseas travel this year or booking a holiday exceeding four weeks, contact the DWP as soon as possible. You can reach the PIP enquiry line at 0800 121 4433, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

From 6 April, PIP payments rose by 3.8% in line with inflation, meaning those with certain disabilities or health conditions, including musculoskeletal conditions, are entitled to higher amounts. PIP is typically paid every four weeks, with two components: daily living and mobility. The daily living component is either £76.70 or £114.60, while the mobility component is either £30.30 or £80. Combined monthly payments can reach up to £748 following the April changes.
