Enhanced Police Presence in London to Safeguard Jewish Communities After Arson Attack
In a significant security escalation, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing has announced the deployment of hundreds of extra police officers to protect London's Jewish communities. This move comes in the wake of a devastating arson attack on four charity ambulances in Golders Green, which has left the community feeling vulnerable and frightened.
Details of the Security Boost
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor revealed that an additional 264 officers will be patrolling Jewish neighborhoods across London. These teams include armed officers, the mounted branch on horseback, and specialized drones, all aimed at reassuring residents during the sensitive period leading up to Passover, which begins on Wednesday, April 1. The police will focus particularly on Jewish schools and synagogues, ensuring that protective security measures are robust and effective.
Speaking outside New Scotland Yard, Taylor described the attack as "absolutely horrendous" and acknowledged the resilience of the Jewish community, which has faced numerous incidents in recent years. He emphasized that the community's fear is understandable, prompting this heightened response from counter-terrorism units.
The Golders Green Arson Attack
New dramatic footage has emerged showing the moment an ambulance exploded during the arson attack in Golders Green. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, involved four ambulances belonging to Hatzola North West, a volunteer emergency medical service that serves areas including Hendon, Golders Green, Finchley, Mill Hill, Hampstead, and Colindale. Established in 1979 by Jewish communities in North London, Hatzola responds to thousands of emergencies annually and relies entirely on private donations, receiving no government or NHS funding.
The video captures the vehicle engulfed in flames, with smoke billowing into the air as firefighters attempt to extinguish the blaze. The explosion, caused by oxygen tanks, sent orange and pink flames flashing skyward, forcing firefighters to step back. The attack took place next to the Machzike Hadath Synagogue, though its president, Damon Hoff, reported that internal damage was surprisingly limited, with the synagogue remaining open for prayers.
Community Impact and Investigation
Yared Santa Ana, a mother-of-two living opposite the attack site, described being awakened by her dog and witnessing the fire. She noted the loud explosions that shook her home, expressing concern for her children's safety. Investigators are exploring claims by a group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which has allegedly taken responsibility for the attack. Taylor confirmed this as a line of inquiry, highlighting the group's history of claiming incidents across Europe.
He also addressed the broader context of hostile state activities, citing Iran, China, and Russia as key players using proxies for subversive actions in the UK. Over the past six months, national security act investigations have surged by 50%, reflecting a fivefold increase in recent years. This trend underscores the growing threat to communities, with antisemitism on the rise, as evidenced by reports from the Community Security Trust and recent hate crime statistics.
Broader Implications and Future Measures
The latest official figures indicate that Jewish people experience the highest rate of religious hate crimes among faith groups in England and Wales. This attack follows other incidents, such as the deadly synagogue shooting in Manchester in October 2025 and recent espionage charges linked to Iran. Taylor stressed that an attack on the Jewish community is an attack on all of Britain, vowing to use specialist assets to bring perpetrators to justice.
As Passover approaches, police are prioritizing protective security measures nationwide, with the additional officers in London serving as a key component of this strategy. Taylor reiterated the importance of religious festivals and the need for communities to feel safe, promising continued vigilance and collaboration with forces across the country to enhance security for everyone.
