Four Men Detained in London on Suspicion of Spying for Iran's Intelligence Service
Counter-terrorism police in London have made a significant breakthrough in a long-running investigation, arresting four men on suspicion of aiding Iran's intelligence service. The suspects are accused of spying on locations and individuals linked to the Jewish community in the capital, raising serious security concerns.
Details of the Arrests and Operation
The arrests were carried out as part of a preplanned operation by Counter Terrorism Policing London. At approximately 1am on Friday, officers detained the men at various addresses across London and its outskirts. The suspects include one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian nationals, highlighting the international dimensions of this case.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation. "Today's arrests are part of a long-running investigation and part of our ongoing work to disrupt malign activity where we suspect it," she stated. Flanagan also addressed public concerns, particularly within the Jewish community, urging vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities.
Specific Arrest Locations and Additional Detentions
The Metropolitan Police provided detailed information on the arrests:
- A 40-year-old man and a 55-year-old man were arrested at addresses in Barnet, with searches currently ongoing at these locations.
- A 52-year-old man was detained at an address in Watford, and police are conducting searches at this property as well as a linked address in Wembley.
- A 22-year-old man was arrested at an address in Harrow.
In a related development, six other men—aged 29, 39, 42, 49, and two aged 20—were arrested at the same Harrow location on suspicion of assisting an offender. All ten individuals remain in custody as the investigation continues to unfold.
Community Impact and Police Response
This case has sparked alarm within London's Jewish community, given the alleged targeting of their locations and individuals. Commander Flanagan reassured the public, stating, "We understand the public may be concerned, in particular the Jewish community, and as always, I would ask them to remain vigilant and if they see or hear anything that concerns them, then to contact us." The police are committed to ensuring safety and disrupting any threats posed by foreign intelligence activities.
As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge. The arrests underscore the persistent efforts of counter-terrorism units to combat espionage and protect national security in the UK.
