Counter-Terror Police Investigate London Arson Attacks on Iranian and Jewish Targets
Counter-terrorism investigators in London are examining three separate arson attacks that targeted an Iranian dissident media outlet and Jewish locations, raising concerns about potential involvement by the Iranian state. The incidents, which occurred in recent weeks, have led to multiple arrests and heightened security measures across the city.
Recent Attack on Iran International Offices
The latest incident took place at approximately 8:30 PM on Wednesday outside the offices of Iran International, a Persian-language news channel based in Wembley, north-west London. According to the Metropolitan Police, an ignited container was thrown at a car park at the company's premises, but the fire extinguished immediately. Following a police pursuit that involved an armed response vehicle, authorities arrested a 16-year-old boy and two men, aged 19 and 21, on suspicion of arson endangering life.
This attack followed an attempted firebombing at Finchley Reform Synagogue on Wednesday morning and an arson attack last month on four ambulances operated by a Jewish charity in Golders Green. Forensic officers were seen attending the synagogue, while in connection with the ambulance attack, two 18-year-olds were arrested at separate addresses in east London on Thursday. One was detained on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life, and the other on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.
Police Response and Investigations
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that all three incidents are being handled by London's counter-terrorism unit. Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes emphasized that the attacks are being treated as separate events, and it is too early to speculate on motives. He issued a stern warning to individuals who might be carrying out attacks for foreign states, stating, "For the people who think you can make quick and easy money by committing crimes for others, we will show that they are fools. We will show that they're wrong and they will face consequences."
Jukes referenced the case of Dylan Earl, who is serving a 17-year prison sentence for leading a Russian-ordered arson attack in London, as an example of the severe penalties involved. When asked about the possibility of Iran paying proxies to execute the attacks, Jukes noted that while definitive conclusions cannot be drawn during live investigations, it is a significant part of the current global landscape.
Classification and Motives
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the national coordinator for counter-terrorism policing, explained why the incidents have not yet been classified as terrorist attacks. "We're in the early stages of all of these investigations and are open-minded, and we will consider all offences when we are considering charges or further investigation into the individuals," she said. Evans added that counter-terrorism policing is currently dedicating about a fifth of its workload to hostile state activity, highlighting the broader context of these cases.
The militant group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for the ambulance attack and suggested involvement in the synagogue incident, as well as other attacks across Europe. Evans confirmed that this group is one of many lines of inquiry being pursued by investigators.

In a statement, Iran International's editorial board addressed the attack on their office, noting, "At this stage, the motives and intentions of those involved have not been established, and we will not speculate while inquiries continue. But this was a serious incident, and it comes at a time of growing threats and intimidation directed at Iran International and those connected to its journalists." The board highlighted a recent increase in harassment targeting relatives of journalists inside Iran, part of efforts to restrict independent news flow.
