The Royal Marines have conducted a highly secretive commando raid launched directly from a German U-boat during the largest military exercise held in the Arctic so far this year. This audacious operation represents a significant demonstration of specialized amphibious warfare capabilities in one of the world's most challenging environments.
Stealth Insertion from Beneath the Waves
Commandos surfaced aboard the submarine U-35 in a remote fjord approximately 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The troops—drawn from elite specialist units trained to perform reconnaissance and direct naval gunfire from behind enemy lines—slipped silently away using inflatable raiding craft under the cover of darkness.
Once their mission objectives were completed, they returned to the submarine and disappeared beneath the waves, leaving no trace of their presence. The operation, carried out on March 3, was designed to infiltrate unseen, remain completely hidden while reconnoitering simulated enemy positions, call in naval gunfire from allied warships, and execute a clean getaway.
Cold Response 26: NATO's Massive Arctic Exercise
This daring raid formed part of Cold Response 26 (CORE 26), a major NATO drill involving 14 nations and more than 25,000 military personnel. Led by Norwegian forces, the exercise aims to conduct advanced cold-weather training, test defense concepts, enhance integration among Allied Forces, and demonstrate a strong presence in the strategically vital Arctic region.
Alongside the United Kingdom, participating nations include the United States, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. Approximately 1,500 Royal Marine commandos have been operating in northern Norway since January, building up to the full-scale CORE 26 exercise.
Specialist Units and Advanced Tactics
Specialist elements of the UK's highly skilled Commando Force participated in the operation, including the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS), Shore Reconnaissance Troop (SRT), and 148 Commando Forward Observation Battery. The SRS boarded the German U-boat using an Inflatable Raiding Craft, stowing all their equipment before the submarine dove below the surface.
Once in position, they disembarked under the cover of night to establish an observation post, enabling 148 Battery to confirm targets for partner force ships to execute precise naval fires. The second in command of SRS, whose identity remains classified for operational security reasons, emphasized the critical nature of this capability.
'In the High North's harsh and unforgiving domain, where extreme climatic conditions and adversary vigilance dominate, the ability to covertly insert reconnaissance teams ashore via Inflatable Raiding Craft launched from a submarine is indispensable,' the officer stated. 'It delivers the stealthy edge needed to penetrate denied areas, deny the enemy sanctuary, collect vital intelligence on subsurface and littoral threats, and shape the operational environment before any escalation.'

The officer further noted that 'this insertion capability from below the waves provides critical initiative to NATO in one of the planet's most strategically contested regions.' The United Kingdom and Norway have committed to strengthening their joint military partnership in the Arctic as NATO allies work to enhance security across the region against potential threats, particularly from Russia.
