The Metropolitan Police, in coordination with international partners, has linked a significant fire at a DHL depot in Birmingham in July 2024 to other similar incidents across the continent.
International Investigation Uncovers Coordinated Attacks
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of the Met Police stated that evidence points toward the involvement of Russian military intelligence. A joint statement from European investigators revealed that four parcels were dispatched from Lithuania in July 2024, destined for addresses in the United Kingdom and Poland.
One of these parcels ignited while in transit at Leipzig Airport in Germany. Another exploded inside a delivery truck in Poland. Authorities managed to seize one parcel before it could cause harm, while the fourth was responsible for the Birmingham DHL depot fire.
Arrest and Ongoing Probe
In a related development, a 38-year-old Romanian national was arrested in the UK last year on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence agency. Although he has been released from custody, he remains under active investigation as part of this widening probe.
The investigation, described as complex and multi-national, is examining "several fires involving cargo" that have occurred at various locations. European officials have confirmed that additional "test packages" were also sent to the United States and Canada, though no incidents were reported from those shipments.
Pattern of Self-Igniting Parcels Emerges
Security experts are analyzing the method of operation, which involves parcels designed to self-ignite during transport. This technique suggests a sophisticated operation aimed at disrupting logistics networks and causing economic damage through targeted arson attacks.
