Coordinated Settler Attacks Target West Bank Communities During Religious Holiday

Israeli settlers have executed a series of organized assaults across the occupied West Bank, setting residential properties and automobiles on fire while injuring numerous Palestinian residents. Witness accounts describe these as coordinated incursions targeting multiple communities simultaneously, with security forces present but failing to intervene effectively.

Widespread Violence Across Multiple Locations

The attacks unfolded overnight from Saturday into Sunday across at least six distinct locations, occurring during Eid al-Fitr celebrations marking the conclusion of Ramadan. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, settlers entered al-Fandaqumiya and the adjacent town of Seilat al-Dahr, situated south of Jenin, during late Saturday hours.

In al-Fandaqumiya, assailants ignited houses and cars while shattering windows of additional residences as local inhabitants attempted to confront them and extinguish the flames. Seilat al-Dahr witnessed several homes being targeted, with one resident suffering injuries after being physically assaulted.

Additional Communities Targeted

Further violence was documented in Masafer Yatta, located south of Hebron, where two Palestinians sustained wounds and three were detained after settlers entered the area under Israeli military protection. The villages of Qaryout and Jaloud, south of Nablus, experienced similar raids resulting in burned vehicles and injured residents. Photographic evidence from Jalud revealed a four-wheel-drive vehicle completely reduced to a charred framework.

Approximately one hundred masked settlers conducted successive waves of raids in Qaryout and Jaloud, creating chaotic scenes as vehicles were set ablaze and homes came under attack. At least five automobiles were completely burned, while additional vehicles including a fire engine sustained significant vandalism.

Security Forces Present But Inactive

Israeli troops and police personnel were observed on the outskirts of affected villages by 2 a.m., yet witnesses reported they failed to halt the attacks that continued throughout the night or prevent settlers from moving between communities. Closed-circuit television footage captured a substantial group of hooded settlers dressed in black withdrawing from Jaloud after completing their assault.

Additional incidents occurred along roads near Haris, west of Salfit, and adjacent to Rawabi in the Ramallah region, where settlers gathered to throw stones at passing Palestinian vehicles. Comparable events were reported in Tuqou, situated southeast of Bethlehem.

Broader Context of Escalating Violence

These attacks form part of a significant escalation in settler violence that has intensified since the commencement of the Gaza conflict. United Nations data indicates Israeli forces and settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 2023. Human rights organizations consistently note that such attacks frequently occur with minimal accountability for perpetrators.

The Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem has explicitly accused the government of enabling settler violence as a strategic component to solidify control over Palestinian territory. The United Nations has similarly warned that Israeli policies in the West Bank risk forcibly displacing Palestinian communities from their ancestral lands.

Official Responses and Additional Incidents

The Israeli military acknowledged responding to incidents involving civilians conducting arson against structures and property, along with disturbances in the affected areas, but reported no arrests were made. In a separate incident, Israeli forces shot and wounded two Palestinians late Saturday at the Jabara checkpoint south of Tulkarem, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.

Yair Golan, leader of Israel's centre-left Democrats, strongly condemned the violence on Sunday, accusing the government of fostering lawlessness throughout the occupied West Bank. In a social media statement, Golan declared: "While we are fighting in Iran and on the northern border, under missile attacks and with many seriously wounded, this government is encouraging total anarchy."

He further asserted: "Jewish terrorism is spreading, exploiting the war, with the backing of extremist ministers and dangerous encouragement from the prime minister and the defence minister. This is a failure of responsibility for Israel's security."

Recent Violent Incidents Documented

B'Tselem reported on March 15 that Israeli troops operating in Tamoun within the northern Jordan Valley opened fire on a vehicle traveling through the village, killing a Palestinian couple and two of their children. The victims were identified as Ali Bani Odeh, 38; his wife Waad Bani Odeh, 36; and their sons Othman, six, and Mohammad, five.

The organization stated: "Soldiers removed two other children from the vehicle: Khaled, 11, and Mustafa, eight. Both sustained light injuries from shrapnel. They then violently interrogated Khaled at the scene. Initially, the military prevented ambulances from reaching the area, and only after some time were medical teams allowed to approach. The military confiscated the family's vehicle, which was riddled with bullets."

In another March incident, Israeli settlers sexually assaulted a Palestinian man, tying his genitalia with zip ties and parading him naked before his family members, according to victim and witness testimonies. Since the beginning of the current year, Israel has killed at least 26 Palestinians in the West Bank, with at least 18 shot directly by military forces.
