Two Men Face Serious National Security Act Charges for Alleged Espionage Against Jewish Community
Two individuals have been formally charged with offences under the National Security Act following allegations of spying activities targeting London's Jewish community. The charges represent a significant development in what authorities describe as a complex and sensitive investigation involving foreign intelligence operations.
Defendants and Specific Charges
The accused are identified as Nematollah Shahsavani, a 40-year-old dual Iranian/British national residing in North Finchley, and Alireza Farasati, a 22-year-old Iranian national from Edgware. Both face charges of engaging in contact likely to assist a foreign intelligence service between July 9, 2025 and August 15, 2025.
This alleged activity contravenes section 3 of the National Security Act, 2023. Investigators have confirmed that Iran is the foreign country to which this investigation relates, adding a significant international dimension to the case.
Court Appearance and Investigation Details
The defendants are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, March 19, 2026. Their arrests occurred two weeks prior to the charges being filed, during which time detectives conducted intensive, round-the-clock evidence gathering and assessment.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), emphasized the gravity of the situation. "These are extremely serious charges under the National Security Act," she stated, "which have come about following what has been a very complex investigation."
Police Response and Community Reassurance
Authorities have worked closely with Crown Prosecution Service colleagues throughout the investigation. Evans acknowledged potential public concern, particularly within the Jewish community, but sought to provide reassurance about police commitment to community safety.
"We fully recognise that the public - and in particular the Jewish community - will be concerned," Evans noted, "but I hope this investigation reassures them that we will not hesitate to take action if we identify there may be a threat to their safety, and will be relentless in our pursuit of those who may be responsible."
Counter Terrorism Policing maintains close collaboration with frontline officers nationwide to ensure community protection. The public is encouraged to report any concerns through local policing teams or national reporting mechanisms.
Additional Investigation Outcomes
As part of the same investigation, two other men were arrested on March 6, 2026. These individuals have since been released without charge, indicating the focused nature of the prosecution against Shahsavani and Farasati.
The case highlights ongoing national security challenges and the sophisticated mechanisms employed to address potential threats to specific communities within the United Kingdom.
