Two Suspects Released Without Charge in Iranian Spy Investigation
Two of four men arrested on suspicion of spying for Iran have been released without charge, according to police authorities. The four individuals were originally detained on March 6th on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, specifically relating to Iranian operations.
Investigation Focuses on Jewish Community Surveillance
The ongoing police investigation centers on the surveillance of locations and individuals connected to London's Jewish community. Authorities have been examining potential threats and monitoring activities that could compromise community safety in the metropolitan area.
Police secured a warrant for further detention on March 12th, which would have allowed them to keep the suspects in custody until March 20th. However, on Sunday, one of the men was released from custody without facing any formal charges. Subsequently, another suspect has also been released without charge, leaving two individuals still in police custody.
Remaining Suspects and Police Response
The two men who remain in custody include a 40-year-old arrested in the Barnet area and a 22-year-old detained in the Harrow region. Police continue their investigation into these individuals while the released suspects face no further action at this time.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, serving as the senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Police, addressed public concerns regarding the investigation. "This has been a long-running investigation, and part of our ongoing work to disrupt malign activity where we suspect it," Evans stated.
"We fully recognize that the public - and in particular the Jewish community - may be concerned, but I also hope the action we have taken reassures them that we will not hesitate to take action if we think there may be a threat to their safety," she continued.
Community Vigilance Encouraged
Evans emphasized the importance of community awareness and cooperation with law enforcement. "As ever, I would ask them to remain vigilant and if they see or hear anything that concerns them, then to contact us," she advised, highlighting the collaborative approach between police and community members in maintaining security.
The investigation represents part of broader counter-terrorism efforts in London, particularly focusing on potential foreign intelligence operations targeting specific communities. Police have been examining vehicles and properties connected to the case, including a Skoda vehicle examined in Finchley, north London, following the initial arrests.
Authorities continue to assess intelligence and evidence while maintaining their commitment to protecting all communities in London from potential security threats.
