UK Issues Stark Warning to Putin Following Month-Long Surveillance Operation
Defence Secretary John Healey has disclosed details of a significant military operation that saw British forces meticulously track three Russian submarines operating off the United Kingdom's coastline for an entire month. The operation, which concluded recently, involved substantial resources from the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
Large-Scale Military Response to Undersea Threat
According to Healey, the response to the perceived threat was comprehensive and sustained. A Royal Navy warship was deployed, traveling thousands of nautical miles to monitor the vessels. Simultaneously, RAF P8 maritime patrol aircraft were activated to provide aerial surveillance and tracking capabilities.
The operation mobilized approximately 500 military personnel across various branches, demonstrating the seriousness with which UK defence authorities viewed the incursion. All three Russian submarines, which intelligence suggests were engaged in scanning the seabed for critical underwater infrastructure, have since departed UK territorial waters.
'We See You' Message to Moscow
Healey stated unequivocally that the Russian vessels were left with no uncertainty about being under constant observation. "Their movements were not as covert as President Putin planned," the Defence Secretary emphasized during his announcement.
In a direct message to the Russian leadership, Healey declared: "I'm making this statement to call out this Russian activity, and to President Putin I say, 'We see you.' We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and have serious consequences."
Protecting Critical National Infrastructure
The operation highlights growing concerns about the vulnerability of undersea cables and pipelines that form the backbone of global communications and energy networks. These submerged assets are increasingly viewed as potential targets in geopolitical tensions between Western nations and Russia.
British defence officials have been particularly vigilant about Russian naval activity in the North Atlantic and waters surrounding the British Isles, where multiple vital communication cables connect the UK to North America and continental Europe.
The month-long surveillance operation represents one of the most substantial public acknowledgments of such tracking efforts in recent years, signaling both capability and determination to protect national security interests.
