Ukrainian Army Accuses Russian Forces of Executing Four Unarmed Prisoners During Easter Ceasefire

The Ukrainian 14th Army Corps has issued a shocking statement alleging that Russian troops executed four unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war during what was supposed to be a temporary Orthodox Easter ceasefire. According to the military unit, the incident occurred near the village of Vetarynarne in the Kharkiv region of northwestern Ukraine.

Details of the Alleged Execution

The Ukrainian military statement describes how Russian forces launched an attack on Ukrainian positions, leading to the capture of four soldiers. Despite the soldiers being unarmed and a ceasefire being in effect for Orthodox Easter celebrations, Russian troops allegedly executed the prisoners. The 14th Army Corps declared: 'Russia proves once again that its army is a terrorist group for which no rules or laws exist. The execution of prisoners has become a systemic practice for the enemy, indicating conscious approval of such crimes by the Russian high command.'

Ceasefire Violations Mount on Both Sides

Both Russia and Ukraine had announced a short ceasefire for Orthodox Easter on Saturday, but the temporary peace appears to have been widely violated. Ukrainian forces reported that Russia committed 2,299 violations since the truce began, including the shooting of the four unarmed soldiers. Meanwhile, Russian authorities claimed Ukraine committed 1,971 violations, including three counter-attacks.

Zelensky's Response and Peace Proposals

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the situation, stating: 'We all understand who we are dealing with. Ukraine will adhere to the ceasefire and respond strictly in kind. The absence of Russian strikes in the air, on land, and at sea will mean no response from our side.' Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine has repeatedly proposed various ceasefire formats to Russia and believes Easter should be a time of silence and safety. He added: 'A ceasefire on Easter could also become the beginning of real movement toward peace – our side has made the corresponding proposal.'

Spiritual Dimension of the Conflict

Father Roman, a Ukrainian army chaplain who led Easter blessing ceremonies, described the holiday as a moment of faith shared by Ukrainians in their identity and future. He stated: 'We are defending our borders. We are defending our identity. We are a free people who live on this territory. We have faith, deep traditions and historical heritage. It's all about the identity of Ukrainians.'

The Ukrainian military maintains readiness for any developments on the frontline while continuing to call for genuine peace negotiations. The alleged execution of prisoners during a religious ceasefire has intensified international scrutiny of the conflict's conduct and raised serious questions about adherence to international humanitarian law.
