US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reported significant progress in peace talks with Iran, suggesting that the world may hear good news in the coming hours. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi during a diplomatic visit to India, Rubio stated, “I do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news.”
Progress and Caution
Rubio emphasized that while “significant” strides have been made, the progress is not yet final. He reiterated the United States’ firm stance that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon. Additionally, he stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to global maritime traffic without Tehran imposing tolls for safe passage.
Details of the Talks
“We have made some progress over the last 48 hours working with our partners in the Gulf region on an outline that could ultimately – if it succeeds – leave us not just with a completely open strait … and with addressing some of the key things that underpin what has been Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions in the past,” Rubio explained.
The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear program and ensure freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway. Rubio’s remarks were made during a joint press conference with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar following their meeting in New Delhi.
