Three dead in Sydney crash after police welfare check

A 42-year-old man was among three people who died in a horrific vehicle crash in south Sydney after he fled from police who were conducting a welfare check. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving the community in shock.

Details of the Incident

Police officers were called to a property in Gymea Bay, southern Sydney, at 12:25 am on Saturday for a welfare check. Upon arrival, a 42-year-old man drove away in a white Audi. Shortly after, reports came in that the Audi had crashed into a blue Toyota sedan at Sans Souci, approximately 7 kilometers away, after rolling over a concrete barrier.

The driver of the Audi died at the scene, as did the driver and passenger of the Toyota, who have not yet been formally identified. Superintendent Graham Hibbs described the crash as a horrific scene and expressed condolences to the families of all three victims.

Police Response and Investigation

Superintendent Hibbs stated that the initial call was for a welfare check related to a mental health incident. Police were unable to speak with the man before he fled. It is believed the Audi was traveling at considerable speed at the time of the crash. Between 20 and 40 bystanders attempted to help when one of the cars caught fire.

A crime scene has been established, and investigations are ongoing. Drugs and alcohol are being considered as potential factors in the crash. This incident adds to a deadly 24 hours on Australian roads, including a separate crash in Queensland that killed a 25-year-old woman and an infant, and another where two teenage girls were seriously injured.
