An ICE agent fatally shot a Mexican father-of-three during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, on July 8, 2026. The officer fired after the man allegedly tried to evade arrest, rammed an ICE vehicle, and attempted to run over an officer.
Victim identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo
The man has been identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national. He was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries, according to officials. The shooting occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. local time.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE law enforcement 'attempted to conduct a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien.'
Family speaks out
Mr. Salgado Araujo's son, Ronaldo Salgado, told The Washington Post that his father had been in the US for over three decades and worked in construction 'to provide for myself, two brothers, and my mother.' He added: 'My father did not deserve this.'
Official account
Homeland Security said: 'The driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo—an illegal alien from Mexico—attempted to evade arrest. From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponised his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defence.'
'The driver was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. The driver was transported to the hospital where he passed away from his injuries.'
Investigations launched
An investigation into the shooting has been launched, led by Homeland Security. FBI Houston is carrying out its own separate probe into the alleged assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
Broader context
The incident evokes memories of the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renée Good in Minneapolis, which sparked fierce backlash and protests against ICE. Under Donald Trump's administration, ICE has ramped up operations targeting major cities as part of mass deportations, causing fear among immigrant communities. Houston, the largest city in Texas, has a population of about 6.5 million, with 28% White, 24% Hispanic, 22% Asian, and 21% Black, according to census figures.
