ICE Detains NYC Council Worker, Mayor Mamdani Decries 'Assault on Democracy'
NYC Council Worker Detained by ICE at Routine Appointment

Federal immigration agents have detained an employee of the New York City Council, igniting fierce condemnation from the city's leadership and intensifying criticism of the Trump administration's immigration policies.

Mayor and Council Speaker Condemn 'Overreach'

Mayor Zohran Mamdani branded the detention an "assault on our democracy, on our city, and our values" in a statement posted on X. He demanded the employee's immediate release and pledged to monitor the situation closely.

The employee was taken into custody on Monday during what was described as a "routine immigration appointment." The council was alerted after the detained worker called the council's human resources department seeking assistance.

Council Speaker Julie Menin, while not naming the individual, confirmed he was legally present in the United States with work authorisation valid until October 2026. She labelled the ICE action as "overreach" and stated the council was actively working to secure his release.

A Pattern of Targeting Law-Abiding Immigrants

At a press conference, Menin revealed that the Department of Homeland Security had provided no basis for the detainment. The employee, who is of Venezuelan descent, was transferred to a detention centre in Manhattan.

Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman, who also spoke, stressed the employee was a "law-abiding immigrant with work authorisation." He asserted there was no indication of any wrongdoing beyond his immigration status prompting the arrest.

This incident is not isolated. It follows a documented pattern where federal officers have targeted mandatory immigration check-ins and appointments across the country. Immigration experts criticise this strategy as a trap for those attempting to comply with the law.

"It's bad policy," said Lindsay Toczylowski of the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, commenting on the trend last year. "By putting immigration officers in the courtrooms, they're discouraging people from following the processes, punishing people for following the rules."

Nationwide Backlash and Escalating Tensions

The detention occurs amidst a planned escalation of ICE operations by the Trump administration, despite widespread protests against the agency's tactics. These tactics are seen as central to executing the president's deportation agenda.

Public anger has been further fuelled by the recent shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, allegedly by an ICE agent, which sparked street protests.

In a related development, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced a lawsuit against the federal government on Monday. The suit aims to curb the influx of ICE agents into the state, alleging "excessive and lethal force" and "warrantless, racist arrests."

As the situation develops, New York City officials vow to continue their fight for the employee's release, framing the event as a critical battle for the rights and dignity of all residents.
