The London Borough of Bromley is in mourning following the death of a long-serving and respected local politician. Conservative councillor Keith Onslow, who represented the ward of Petts Wood and Knoll, passed away during the Christmas period after a period of serious illness.
A Dedicated Public Servant
Cllr Onslow's commitment to his community spanned over a decade. He was first elected to Bromley Council in 2014, beginning an 11-year tenure of dedicated service. His significant contributions were formally recognised through key roles, most notably his chairmanship of the council's Pension Committee from 2017 until his death. He also served the borough as Deputy Mayor between 2023 and 2024.
Despite facing declining health in recent times, colleagues noted that his dedication to his residents never wavered. He remained passionately involved in local issues and continued his work with characteristic determination until the very end.
Colleagues Pay Heartfelt Tribute
Tributes from across the political spectrum have highlighted Cllr Onslow's professionalism, expertise, and friendship. Colin Smith, the Leader of Bromley Council, led the condolences, expressing profound sadness and extending sympathies to Onslow's widow, Sara, and his family.
“Although Keith had been in declining health for some time, his customary passion and total determination to continue serving Petts Wood residents and doing the things he believed in remained with him until the very end,” Smith stated. He specifically praised Onslow's “stellar Chairmanship” of the Pension Committee, calling it a “stand out legacy achievement” that had become “something of Local Government legend.”
The Mayor of Bromley, Jonathan Andrews, described Onslow as both a colleague and a friend, saying he was “deeply saddened” by the loss. The sentiment of cross-party respect was echoed by Labour councillor Simon Jeal, who had served alongside him on the Pensions Committee.
“Keith was a dedicated Councillor and Chairman, going above and beyond in his efforts to do the best for Bromley’s pension scheme members,” Jeal said. “I deeply respected his acumen and hard work... he will be remembered and very much missed.”
A Lasting Legacy in Local Government
The passing of Cllr Keith Onslow marks the loss of a formidable figure in Bromley's local political landscape. His 11 years of service, particularly his influential work safeguarding the council's pension fund, have left an indelible mark. As the community and his colleagues come to terms with his death, the unanimous praise from political allies and opponents alike stands as a testament to a life committed to public service. The council's focus now turns to supporting his family while reflecting on the substantial legacy he leaves behind in the borough he served so diligently.
