Wembley Business Owners Fearful After String of Attacks, No Arrests Made

Business owners in Wembley are reporting high levels of stress and fear following a series of attacks on multiple premises, which have so far resulted in no arrests. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that investigations into these incidents are ongoing, while Brent Council is actively involved in sharing intelligence and supporting those affected. Traders in the area are expressing deep concern about whether the attacks are linked, if they are targeted, and what might happen next.

Incidents on Ealing Road

Officers have been called to reports of criminal damage and affray by groups of youths at several premises on Ealing Road over the past few weeks. Suraj Sweet Mart, Panesar Food and Wine, and Manek Chowk Indian restaurant were targeted earlier this month. Videos circulating online show a group of young males storming the shops and trashing the interior, causing significant disruption and damage.

In one notable incident, officers were called to Manek Chowk at around 8.54pm on Thursday, March 5, after allegations that a group of masked males had entered the premises and caused extensive damage to the interior. The restaurant owner revealed that businesses have been forced to close early to prevent further damage, highlighting the severe impact on daily operations.

Business Owners Speak Out

Speaking anonymously to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the owner of Manek Chowk described the traumatic events: "They were throwing things at the staff. They smashed the whole restaurant—tables, chairs, bottles. I had to close my shop down the next day because there was no staff. No staff wanted to come in, especially the ladies."

The owner also criticized the police response, calling it "useless" and adding, "There is no safety, there is no law and order. It's ridiculous what happened, and it's not just one day. For three days, I haven't slept properly. The business is suffering; we have lost money, customers, and staff." Further frustration was expressed: "[The police] have time to stop you for a bad tyre, but when people come and threaten your staff, they don't do anything. Business people are suffering; it's terrifying."

Concerns Over Targeted Attacks

There have been suggestions by traders and residents that the attacks are specifically targeting Hindu businesses, which is adding to the fears within the community. In response, the police have stated that while some incidents occurred at Hindu businesses, others did not, indicating a need for further investigation to determine any patterns or motives.

The Met Police added that, although no arrests have been made, investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the attacks and whether the incidents are linked. Additional patrols have been deployed in the area to provide reassurance and enhance security.

Official Responses

Chief Inspector Yu Zhang, who leads policing in the area, commented: "We are aware of several incidents at shops and restaurants on Ealing Road, Wembley, since mid-February, with individuals involved in crime and antisocial behavior. Additional patrols are taking place to provide reassurance, and we continue to work closely with community partners, including local faith venues, to ensure everyone feels safe. Our focus is to protect all communities, support victims, and keep the area safe."

Brent Council has condemned the attacks, calling "any violent or targeted intimidation" of local businesses "utterly unacceptable." The council described the incidents as "deeply concerning" and emphasized that business owners and staff should be able to work "without fear."

A spokesperson for the local authority stated: "The council is working hand in glove with the Metropolitan Police and local partners to share intelligence, support those affected, and help ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Brent's strength is its diversity, and we will not allow a small number of violent individuals to undermine community cohesion or intimidate local traders. We encourage anyone with information or footage to come forward to the police without delay."
