Sir David Attenborough to Feature in BBC Documentary Honoring Queen Elizabeth II's Centenary
In a poignant tribute to the late monarch, Sir David Attenborough is set to appear in a new BBC documentary titled Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century. The film will be broadcast on what would have been Queen Elizabeth II's 100th birthday, commemorating her 70-year reign as the UK's longest-serving head of state until her passing in 2022.
Documentary Details and Notable Contributors
The documentary will utilize archival footage and fresh interviews to explore landmark events from the Queen's lifetime, spanning from the Blitz during World War II to the London 2012 Olympics. Sir David, who himself turns 100 in May, joins an esteemed lineup of contributors including Dame Helen Mirren, Queen Camilla, and former US President Barack Obama, all paying homage to the Queen's enduring legacy.
Reflecting on his interactions with the Queen, Sir David shared insights with the PA News Agency. He remarked, 'If there was a technical hitch, she wanted to know what it was, and if it had a funny side, she was quick to see the joke.' He added, 'Yet not for one second could you forget that you were in the presence of someone who had willingly accepted enormous responsibility and dedicated her life to serving the nation – that you were, in short, in the presence of royalty. The whole nation is bereaved.'
Longstanding Relationship and Collaborative Projects
Sir David had a longstanding professional relationship with the Queen, having produced her televised Christmas Day address for over five years during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2018, they collaborated on The Queen's Green Planet, a groundbreaking documentary that followed her initiative to establish a global network of protected forests across the 52 Commonwealth nations.
Praising her character, Sir David told ITV News that the Queen had a genuine laugh and was adept at putting people at ease. He noted, 'She was an expert at getting people to relax. When you met her, you were well-aware that you were in the presence of someone who was extremely important to our society, and yet she made it seem that you were meeting another human being with exactly the same conditions that all human beings have.'
Documentary's Broader Impact and Additional Perspectives
Catherine Catton, head of factual entertainment and events at the BBC, emphasized the documentary's significance, stating, 'Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century explores the life of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II through the lens of a century of change and offers an important reflection on how modern Britain has been shaped.'
Dame Helen Mirren, who portrayed Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen and the 2013 stage play The Audience, also contributed. Following the monarch's death, she expressed, 'I'm mourning along with the rest of my country, the passing of a great Queen. I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility.'
Sir David Attenborough's Longevity and Personal Insights
Interestingly, Sir David and Queen Elizabeth were both born in 1926, just a month apart, with the Queen in April and Sir David in May. When asked about his secret to a long life, Sir David attributes it partly to his largely vegetarian diet. In a 2020 interview with Radio Times, he explained, 'The planet can't support billions of meat eaters. If we all ate only plants, we'd need only half the land we use at the moment.' He clarified that he consumes cheese and fish, and humorously admitted to occasionally eating chicken, calling himself a 'chicken-eating hypocrite' in a Times interview.
Beyond diet, Sir David's sense of purpose has likely contributed to his longevity. Since his first major documentary in 1954, he has remained active, working on over 100 documentaries and series, including acclaimed titles like The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life in Colour, and Madagascar, solidifying his status as a national treasure.
Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century is scheduled to air on BBC One and iPlayer later this year, offering viewers a heartfelt look at a remarkable era in British history.
