Epstein Files Expose Elite Connections in Business and Arts

A comprehensive Guardian investigation into more than a million Jeffrey Epstein files has revealed the convicted sex offender's deep relationships with prominent figures across business and the arts. This second part of a two-part series focuses on Epstein's extensive email correspondence with former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, film director Woody Allen, and former Barclays CEO Jes Staley, uncovering personal confidences and professional networking.

Larry Summers: Personal Confidences and Donation Strategies

The analysis identified over 3,000 direct emails between Epstein and Summers spanning from 2010 to 2019, including communications with Summers' wife, Elisa New. Initially discussing banking regulations and arranging meetings in Cambridge and New York, the correspondence evolved to include personal matters. In late 2018, Summers confided in Epstein about relationship issues with an unnamed woman, writing: "I'm sure this is very amusing for you. Young divas are not part of my life experience." Epstein responded with advice about protection and boundaries.

Epstein facilitated connections between Summers' wife and potential donors, including private equity investor Leon Black, while strategizing how Epstein could donate $110,000 to New's Poetry in America project without creating reputational issues for Harvard University. Summers has since expressed deep shame about maintaining communication with Epstein, calling it a "major error in judgment."

Epstein organized numerous high-profile meetings for Summers, introducing him to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Japanese investor Joi Ito, PayPal founder Peter Thiel, and venture capitalist Reid Hoffman. He also arranged a film screening with Woody Allen that Summers and his wife attended.

Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn: Extensive Friendship Revealed

More than 3,500 emails between Epstein and Allen's office reveal an extensive friendship involving frequent meals, private screenings, gifts, and international trips to Italy and France. Two-thirds of these communications involved Allen's wife, Soon-Yi Previn, who expressed admiration for Epstein in January 2018: "OMG you're the best. I love how thorough you are. I love your all encompassing gifts. People should take lessons from you."

The correspondence includes discussions about sexual abuse allegations, with Previn quoting Allen's comparison of his situation to the "Salem atmosphere" surrounding Bill Cosby's scandal. Epstein and Previn exchanged views about the Cosby case and allegations against Allen, who has consistently denied claims by his ex-partner Mia Farrow that he abused their adopted daughter.

Epstein provided personal gifts to the couple, including a robe Allen had "always wanted," and assisted with their daughter's education by donating $15,000 to Hewitt School in New York and leveraging his relationship with Bard College president Leon Botstein. When asked about dinners at Epstein's home, Allen described them as "fascinating" and claimed Epstein had told them he was "falsely put in jail."

Jes Staley: Close Friendship Despite Denials

Nearly 4,000 emails between Epstein and Staley beginning in 2008 contradict the banker's claims of only having a professional association. Staley's messages reveal a close personal friendship, including a November 2009 email where he wrote: "When all hell breaks loose, and the world is crumbling, I will come here, and be at peace... I owe you much. And I deeply appreciate our friendship. I have few so profound."

Staley resigned from Barclays and was banned from the UK financial industry for misleading regulators about his relationship with Epstein. Documents show he was named as a trustee of Epstein's estate until at least May 2015, contradicting his court testimony. US prosecutors reviewed allegations against Staley, though he has never been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

Methodology and Context

The Guardian used advanced language models to clean and analyze the email data, manually verifying results and removing duplicates where possible. The analysis focused on correspondence occurring after Epstein's 2008 conviction, though additional documents may reveal earlier communications. Appearing in the Epstein files does not constitute evidence of wrongdoing, but the emails demonstrate how Epstein connected elites across finance, technology, politics, and the arts.

As Summers noted in a 2017 email introducing Epstein to a scientific journal editor: "I know people who circulate among the powerful, among the wealthy and among the brilliant. Jeffrey does all three to a unique extent." The investigation reveals the extensive network Epstein cultivated and maintained despite his criminal convictions.
