Husband 'used fetish site to lure man and frame him for wife's murder'
Husband used fetish site in 'elaborate double-murder scheme'

A husband accused of orchestrating an 'elaborate double-murder scheme' to frame another man for his wife's killing is set to face trial. Brendan Banfield is charged with the aggravated murder of his wife, Christine, and a stranger, Joseph Ryan, at the couple's $1 million home in northern Virginia.

The Prosecution's Case: A Web of Deceit

According to court records, Banfield and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, were present with the victims on the morning of February 24, 2023, when the killings occurred in the primary bedroom. Initially, they claimed Ryan was an intruder they shot in self-defence after he stabbed Christine.

Prosecutors, however, allege a far more sinister plot. They argue Banfield and Magalhães, who were romantically involved, lured Ryan to the house and staged the scene. In 2024, Magalhães pleaded guilty to a downgraded manslaughter charge and provided a statement supporting the state's theory.

Her statement claimed she and Banfield created an account in Christine's name on a social media platform for people interested in sexual fetishes. There, they connected with Ryan and arranged a meeting for a sexual encounter involving a knife on the morning of the murders. Prosecutor Eric Clingan stated this testimony helped solidify their case ahead of trial.

Contested Digital Evidence

Not all investigators have accepted the catfishing theory. Brendan Miller, a former digital forensic examiner with the Fairfax County Police Department, testified that his analysis of dozens of devices led him to conclude Christine Banfield had connected with Ryan herself.

An evidence analysis team at the University of Alabama peer-reviewed and affirmed Miller's findings. Miller was transferred from the digital forensics unit in late 2024, though a former commander testified the move was not punitive. Banfield's attorney, John Carroll, argued the transfer was directly linked to the case and that police had reassigned the lead detective for pushing back on the official theory.

Additional Charges and Upcoming Trial

Banfield, who has pleaded not guilty, faces additional charges of child abuse and felony child cruelty, as his daughter was in the house during the killings. These will be addressed during the aggravated murder trial, which is scheduled to proceed.

The case presents a complex web of alleged infidelity, digital deception, and violent crime, with the jury tasked with untangling the conflicting narratives surrounding the deaths of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan.
