Former London's Burning Actor John Alford Found Dead in Prison

John Alford, the actor best known for his role in the ITV firefighter drama London's Burning, has been found dead in prison just two months after being sentenced for sexual assault. The prison service confirmed his death on March 13, 2026, with an investigation now underway by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

Eight-and-a-Half Year Sentence for Sexual Assault

Alford, whose real name was John Shannon, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in January 2026 after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two teenage girls in April 2022. The court heard that the actor, who rose to fame on BBC's Grange Hill before starring as Billy Ray in London's Burning during the 1990s, attacked the girls while they were intoxicated after a night out at a pub.

The prosecution detailed that Shannon had intercourse with a 14-year-old girl and inappropriately touched a 15-year-old girl while she was half asleep on a sofa. The offences occurred at the home of a third girl, whose father was friends with the actor.

Victims' Trauma and Legal Proceedings

The 15-year-old victim described feeling "absolutely sick" and initially planned to keep the assault a secret, but suffered a "mental breakdown" days later, confiding in her friend's mother. Chris White from the Crown Prosecution Service stated that Shannon was "fully aware of the girls' ages, yet he chose to exploit them", highlighting the predatory nature of the crimes.

The trial revealed that both girls were vulnerable due to their intoxication, and Shannon took advantage of the situation at a private residence. The case drew significant media attention due to Shannon's celebrity status from his television career.

Investigation into Prison Death

With Shannon's death occurring in custody, standard procedures require a thorough investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. The prison service spokesperson confirmed the death but provided no further details on the circumstances, pending the official inquiry.

This tragic development adds another layer to a case that has already shocked fans of the actor's work and raised serious questions about accountability in the entertainment industry. The investigation will examine the conditions and events leading to Shannon's death while serving his sentence for these grave offences.
