Russian National Receives Four-Year Sentence for Assault Witnessed by Barron Trump

Matvei Rumiantsev, a Russian national, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice. The assault occurred on January 18 and was witnessed by Barron Trump, the youngest son of former US President Donald Trump, during a video call with the victim.

Video Call Incident Leads to Police Intervention

During the incident, Rumiantsev answered the victim's phone while she was on a FaceTime call with Barron Trump. He then turned the screen toward the woman, who was crying and screaming on the floor. Barron Trump immediately contacted the City of London Police to report the attack. In a transcript of the call, he stated, "Oh I’m calling from the US, uh I just got a call from a girl, you know, she’s getting beat up."

Trump later provided further details to investigators in an email sent in May of last year, noting, "What I saw was very brief indeed but indeed prevalent." His prompt action led to a swift police response and subsequent investigation.

Additional Charges and Court Proceedings

Rumiantsev was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice after he wrote to the victim from prison, attempting to persuade her to withdraw her allegations. However, the court acquitted him of several other serious charges, including:

  • One count of rape and intentional strangulation related to the same day as the assault.
  • Another count of rape and assault alleged to have occurred in November 2024.

The conviction in January followed a thorough legal process, highlighting the importance of digital evidence and witness testimony in modern criminal cases. This case underscores how technology can play a crucial role in reporting and documenting crimes, even across international borders.
