In a deeply emotional and revealing interview, Savannah Guthrie, the prominent co-anchor of NBC's Today show, has voiced her haunting fear that her own fame and public profile could be the reason behind the mysterious disappearance of her elderly mother, Nancy Guthrie. Speaking with her colleague Hoda Kotb, Guthrie described the situation as "unbearable," marking her first public comments since the possible kidnapping incident came to light.
Guthrie's Heartbreaking Suspicions
Guthrie, who has been a fixture on morning television for years, speculated that her mother's disappearance might be linked to her celebrity status. "I don't know that it's because she's my mom and somebody thought, 'Oh, that girl – that lady has money. We can ... make a quick buck.' I mean, that would make sense," Guthrie said during the interview. She expressed profound guilt, adding, "Which is too much to bear, to think that I brought this to her bedside. That it's because of me. And I just have to say, I'm so sorry, mommy. I am so sorry."
Family Insights and Investigation Details
The 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1 from her home near Tucson, Arizona. Guthrie revealed that her brother, who has a military background, immediately suspected a kidnapping and suggested that her fame might have played a role. "It sounds so, like, how dumb could I be? But I just – I didn't wanna believe," Guthrie recounted about her conversation with her brother. "I just said, 'Do you think because of me?' And he said, 'I'm sorry, sweetie, but yeah, maybe.' But I knew that."
Despite an extensive search involving state and federal investigators, no suspect or motive has been identified in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. Last month, the FBI recovered footage from a Ring doorbell camera, which was destroyed in the incident, showing a man with a backpack approaching the front door. Since the footage was released, more than 13,000 tips have been received by the FBI, but no arrests have been made.
Ransom Notes and Ongoing Efforts
Two ransom notes have been received, which Guthrie believes are genuine. "A person that would send a fake ransom note really has to look deeply at themselves, to a family in pain," she said. "But I believe the two notes that we received that we responded to, I tend to believe those are real."
When asked about the progress of the investigation, Guthrie acknowledged the tireless work of law enforcement but emphasized the family's desperate need for answers. "People have worked tirelessly, and we see that. But we need answers. We cannot be at peace without knowing. And someone can do the right thing, and it is never too late to do the right thing. And our hearts are focused on that."
The case continues to unfold, with the Guthrie family and authorities urging anyone with information to come forward, as the search for Nancy Guthrie remains a top priority in this distressing and high-profile disappearance.
