The United States Department of Justice is reportedly dropping fraud charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, the richest man in Asia, after he retained a new legal team headed by Donald Trump's personal lawyer, according to recent reports.
Meeting and Investment Offer
During a confidential meeting at the Justice Department in April, Trump's attorney, Robert J Giuffra Jr, proposed that Adani would inject $10 billion into the US economy and generate 15,000 jobs if prosecutors abandoned the case, as reported by the New York Times and Bloomberg. The offer was accompanied by a 100-slide presentation arguing that prosecutors lacked both evidence and jurisdiction over the matter, according to the Times.
While prosecutors indicated that the potential investment would not influence the case's outcome, the proposal reportedly received a positive response from one senior Justice Department official, the outlets stated.
Allegations and Indictment
Adani was accused of conspiring to pay $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials and misleading American and international investors with false statements. He and two other executives of an Indian renewable energy company were indicted in New York in November 2024 on multiple fraud counts.
At the time, the Justice Department alleged that beyond the bribery scheme, Adani also conspired "to lie to investors and banks to raise billions of dollars, and to obstruct justice." Lisa Miller, then deputy assistant attorney general, stated: "These offenses were allegedly committed by senior executives and directors to obtain and finance massive state energy supply contracts through corruption and fraud at the expense of US investors."
Adani's Background and Business Empire
Gautam Adani is considered one of the wealthiest and most powerful figures globally, as founder of the Adani Group, a conglomerate that operates India's ports, builds coal-fired power stations, and runs coal mines. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, he is Asia's richest person, with an estimated net worth of $104 billion.
He maintains close ties with India's nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose party members have granted the Adani Group contracts that enabled the group to monopolize and expand. This has led to allegations of favoritism and "crony capitalism," which the Adani Group denies. Journalists investigating the company have often faced harassment and legal charges.
Legal Representation
Robert J Giuffra Jr is co-chair of Sullivan & Cromwell, a prominent New York law firm. Shortly before Trump began his second term, Giuffra agreed to represent Trump in appeals of two personal cases, including the Stormy Daniels hush-money case.
The Justice Department and Sullivan & Cromwell did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
