A Utah mother who wrote a children's book about grief after her husband's death and was later convicted of killing him has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Kouri Richins, 35, was found guilty in March of aggravated murder for lacing her husband Eric's cocktail with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl at their home near Park City in 2022.
Sentence Handed Down on Husband's Birthday
Judge Richard Mrazik imposed the sentence on what would have been Eric Richins' 44th birthday. "A person convicted of those things is simply too dangerous to ever be free," the judge said. Prosecutors argued that Richins, a real estate agent with a house-flipping business, was millions of dollars in debt and planning a future with another man. She had secretly taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband and falsely believed she would inherit his estate worth over $4 million after his death.
Additional Convictions
Jurors in Park City also found Richins guilty of four other felonies, including attempted murder for trying to poison her husband weeks earlier on Valentine's Day with a fentanyl-laced sandwich. Throughout the trial, prosecutors portrayed the mother of three as a money-hungry killer, presenting text messages between Richins and her lover in which she fantasized about leaving her husband and gaining millions in a divorce. They also showed internet searches from her phone about lethal doses of fentanyl, luxury prisons, and how poisoning is recorded on death certificates.
Victim's Family Speaks
Eric Richins' sister, Amy Richins, expressed relief after the verdict: "I'm just very happy that we got justice for my brother." She said the family can now focus on supporting Eric's sons, who were aged nine, seven, and five when their father died. In a memo filed by prosecutors, the boys told the judge they would feel unsafe if their mother were ever released. The oldest, now 13, said, "I'm afraid if she gets out, she will come after me and my brothers, my whole family." The middle child, now 11, said he can now "live a happy and successful life without fear of [her] hurting me or anyone I love." The youngest said he would be "so scared" if she were freed.
Richins Maintains Innocence
Richins has consistently maintained her innocence, calling the verdict "an absolute lie" on Wednesday. Her case gained widespread attention when she was arrested in 2023 while promoting her children's book, Are You With Me?, about a boy coping with the death of his father. At the hearing, Richins wore a lime green jail uniform and chatted with her lawyers, while Eric's family passed around tissues. Her lawyers declined to comment before the hearing.
The trial was scheduled for five weeks but ended early when Richins waived her right to testify and her legal team rested without calling any witnesses. Her attorneys expressed confidence that prosecutors had not produced sufficient evidence to convict her of murder. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
