The Metropolitan Police has issued a firm warning that fireworks will not be tolerated at Iran war protests taking place in Central London today, following their use at recent demonstrations. The force has imposed a series of conditions on the rallies to minimize disruption to local residents and businesses.
Strict Conditions Imposed on Protests
Two separate demonstrations are scheduled for this afternoon, both focusing on different aspects of the conflict involving Iran. The first, organized by Stop the War, will protest against US and Israeli attacks. This march will begin at Russell Square near the British Museum and proceed to Whitehall's Richmond Terrace, where speeches are planned. According to Metropolitan Police directives, the assembly must conclude by 6pm, with all speeches and amplified music ceasing 30 minutes earlier.
Separate Demonstration Against Iranian Government
A second protest, called Stage for Freedom and targeting the Iranian government, will march from Hyde Park Corner in Knightsbridge to the Iranian embassy near Hyde Park starting at 2pm. Police conditions mandate that this demonstration must finish by 5pm. Both events have been organized in response to recent military strikes and political tensions involving Iran.
Comprehensive Noise Restrictions Implemented
Scotland Yard has implemented particularly stringent noise restrictions for both protests. Authorities have banned the use of amplified sound equipment for music or speech, along with any other items that could create noise. This prohibition includes musical instruments, sound-emitting devices, and any objects that might be struck or banged together to produce sound.
Police Warning Against Fireworks
Superintendent Neil Holyoak, who is overseeing policing operations in London this weekend, emphasized that officers will not tolerate fireworks at the demonstrations. "We will also not tolerate people setting off fireworks which we have seen in recent weeks," Holyoak stated. "Please ensure if you are planning to attend this weekend's events you act within the law and respect surrounding residents and businesses."
The superintendent explained that the conditions were imposed "chiefly to minimize noise and disruption to local residents based on extensive feedback." He warned that those who refuse to comply with the restrictions risk arrest. Police officers will be deployed throughout the events to ensure they proceed safely and peacefully, with authorities prepared to take immediate action against any criminal behavior.
The Metropolitan Police's proactive measures come as London prepares for potentially large-scale demonstrations concerning international conflicts. By establishing clear boundaries regarding noise levels and prohibiting potentially dangerous items like fireworks, authorities aim to balance protest rights with community protection in the heart of the capital.
