British boy, 13, stabbed to death in Portugal

A 13-year-old British boy has been named as the victim of a fatal stabbing in Portugal, in an incident that also left the suspected attacker dead.

Details of the Tomar Attack

Alfie Hallett was killed in the city of Tomar in central Portugal. The country's Judicial Police confirmed they are investigating the deaths of both the teenager and the alleged assailant. According to local media reports, Portuguese authorities believe the perpetrator was the former partner of Alfie's mother.

Police were alerted to what was feared to be a domestic violence situation. Upon arrival at the scene, officers from the National Republican Guard (GNR) found the mother showing signs of having been restrained and assaulted. She was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Scene of Violence and Explosion

The police statement revealed a harrowing scene. "Both the alleged assailant and the minor presented several injuries caused by a bladed weapon but, despite vital signs still being detectable, death was declared at the scene moments later," it said.

In a further dangerous development, the house where the incident occurred was filled with a strong smell of gas. This subsequently led to an explosion that injured one of the responding GNR officers.

Authorities disclosed that the suspected attacker had previously served a prison sentence for aggravated homicide. Furthermore, the family had been flagged by authorities following domestic violence cases registered in 2022 and 2023.

Tributes and Official Response

Alfie was a keen basketball player, and his local club, Sport Club Operario de Cem Soldos in Tomar, paid a moving tribute. In a Facebook post, the club said: "(Alfie) played his last game on Saturday, played so well seemed like he knew it was his last game. We want to tell you how much we love you and that you will always be in our hearts."

Chamusca Basket Clube, the team Alfie played against on that Saturday, also expressed their solidarity online, offering comfort to his family and friends.

The British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office issued a statement confirming they are "in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Portugal, and stand ready to provide consular support." The incident occurred on Wednesday 24 December 2025.
