Fugitive murderer caught after New Year prison escape

Police have captured a convicted murderer who has been on the run for a week after failing to return to prison on New Year's Day.

Manhunt Ends for One Fugitive

Matthew Armstrong, who was given a life sentence in 2009 for a murder committed during a robbery in Warwickshire, was apprehended by officers. He had been unlawfully at large since Thursday, January 1, 2026.

Armstrong absconded from HMP Leyhill, an open prison in South Gloucestershire. The escape occurred sometime between 5pm and 8pm on New Year's Day.

Second Violent Criminal Still Missing

Armstrong did not flee alone. He escaped alongside Daniel Washbourne, 40, a violent criminal who remains at large. A significant police operation continues to locate Washbourne.

Authorities have warned that the pair have known links to various regions across the country, heightening the national alert.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Vigilance

The capture of Armstrong marks a critical development in the case, but the search intensifies for his accomplice. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings to the police immediately, without approaching the individual.

This incident raises serious questions about security protocols at the Category D open prison, especially during the holiday period. An internal review is likely to follow the conclusion of the police operation.
