Gangland killer receives extended sentence for brutal Uber driver assault

A gang member currently serving a life sentence for the murder of two young men has had his prison term extended following a separate violent attack on an Uber driver in north London. Jason Furtado, aged 29, received an additional three-year consecutive sentence for the assault that occurred three months before the fatal stabbings he helped orchestrate.

Violent confrontation outside nightclub

Furtado pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to the March 2023 attack on Uber driver Mr Edwards. The violent incident occurred around 3:30am outside a club in Islington, north London, after Furtado had been among a group inhaling nitrous oxide.

District judge Emma Deacon KC described the attack as "an explosive piece of violence" that was completely disproportionate to the situation. The confrontation began when Mr Edwards challenged Furtado for banging on his windscreen after dropping off a passenger.

Brutal assault details revealed in court

The court heard that Furtado responded violently by throwing a gas canister at Mr Edwards and striking him over the head with it. After the driver fell to the ground, Furtado continued the assault with multiple blows to the head and stamped on his head at least twice.

Mr Edwards then rolled from the pavement into the road, where he was subsequently run over by a car driven by Furtado's girlfriend, Charlotte Sibley. The 28-year-old from Hackney pleaded guilty to careless driving in connection with the incident.

Court proceedings and sentencing

During sentencing at Wood Green Crown Court, Judge Deacon imposed the consecutive three-year term on Furtado, who is already serving a minimum 34-year sentence for his role in the murders of Leonardo Reid, 15, and Klevi Shekaj, 23. The two victims were stabbed to death during a music video shoot in Archway on June 29, 2023.

Prosecutor Martyn Bowyer told the court that Mr Edwards "remembers nothing until he woke up in hospital" following the brutal assault. The prosecution confirmed they were not proceeding with an attempted murder charge against Furtado in relation to the Uber driver attack.

Girlfriend's role in the incident

Charlotte Sibley, who was three months pregnant at the time of the incident, received a £750 fine and a six-month driving disqualification for her involvement. The judge described her driving as "utterly irresponsible" and involving an "unsafe manoeuvre."

Sibley told police she was in a "frightened and confused state" when she fled the scene and drove over Mr Edwards's leg. Judge Deacon noted that the fight had already stopped by the time Sibley decided to drive away, telling her: "You had run over him. You must have felt something. You had driven over someone's body. In driving away, you were thinking of yourself."

The court recorded not guilty verdicts on allegations of assisting an offender and dangerous driving against Sibley. She was also ordered to pay a statutory surcharge in addition to her fine and driving ban.
