London Duo Sentenced to Prison for Burglary and Car Theft Spree

Two men from London have been handed significant prison sentences after a series of burglaries where they stole car keys and went on joyrides in victims' vehicles. George Knight, aged 33, and Matthew Francis, also 33, were each jailed for 37 months at Guildford Crown Court following their guilty pleas.

Early Morning Break-Ins and Vehicle Thefts

The criminal activities unfolded in the early hours of August 27, 2023, when the pair forced entry into multiple properties in Surrey. Their primary target was car keys, which they used to steal a BMW and an Audi A1 from residential addresses. The burglars operated while homeowners were asleep, making off with not only the vehicles but also personal items such as a handbag from one victim.

Swift Police Response and Apprehension

Surrey Police were alerted around 3:30 am after a crashed BMW was discovered in overgrowth in Leatherhead, just ten minutes after it was stolen from a home in Bookham. The owner utilized a mobile phone app linked to the car's telematics system to track its movements, providing crucial information to authorities.

Simultaneously, another victim reported their Audi missing, with ANPR cameras capturing the vehicle heading towards Givons Grove and onto the A24 Leatherhead Bypass. When officers attempted to intervene, the car sped away, leading to a police pursuit authorized near Junction 9 of the M25. The occupants eventually abandoned the vehicle on Kingston Road in Leatherhead and fled on foot.

Arrests and Evidence Recovery

Knight, from Bexley, was arrested shortly after as he walked near a petrol station. Francis was located by a police dog unit hiding behind pallets in an industrial yard, where he was found with black gloves. A balaclava was also recovered from nearby bushes. Both men were taken into custody on suspicion of burglary, failing to stop, and dangerous driving.

Court Sentencing and Police Statement

At their court appearance on March 17, Knight and Francis pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary dwelling with intent to steal. In addition to their prison terms, the judge ordered them to pay £228 in costs. Investigating officer PC Scruby commented on the case, emphasizing the invasive nature of burglary and the coordinated efforts that led to the arrests.

PC Scruby stated: "This was a targeted series of burglaries carried out in the early hours, with offenders entering homes while victims were asleep to steal car keys and vehicles. Thanks to a combination of swift reporting, vehicle tracking technology, and coordinated police work, including the use of ANPR and our dog unit, we were able to quickly locate the suspects and bring them into custody."

He added that such crimes have a lasting impact on victims and communities, and the result should reassure the public of police commitment to robust investigation and arrest of offenders.
