A man who called emergency services to confess he had 'accidentally' killed his ex-partner has been handed a life sentence, with a chilling remark about missing a video game following his arrest.
Disturbing 999 Call Leads to Arrest
Robert Richens, aged 35, dialled 999 at 6.26am on May 30 last year, telling the operator in a recorded call: 'You're not going to believe this. I think I accidentally killed someone.' He was heard sobbing, 'She's not moving,' before adding with conviction, 'I did not mean to kill this person. I did not mean to do it.'
Police responded to the call and found his victim, Rachael Vaughan, 40, at her home in Oxford. Despite efforts by emergency services, she was declared dead at the scene. Richens was arrested at his address on the same day and charged with murder.
Callous Remark About Video Game
After being taken to a police station, Richens made a shocking comment to officers, stating he would 'miss GTA6' – referring to the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6. When assured by police that he had 'ages' before the game's slated November release, Richens replied that he was likely to be jailed for life, showing a lack of remorse.
He later added that he couldn't get the events 'out of my head' and admitted he might have fled the scene. Richens pleaded guilty to one count of murder on December 12 at Oxford Crown Court.
Life Sentence Imposed
Following a hearing, Richens was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years and one month behind bars. Senior investigation officer DCI Stuart May commented on the case, saying, 'My thoughts remain with Rachael Vaughan's family and with everyone who loved her as they continue to face what is an unimaginable loss.'
DCI May emphasised the heartlessness of Richens' actions, noting, 'Rachael was taken from them in the very place she should have felt safest — her own home. Robert Richens' actions were heartless. He left Rachael alone in her house, made no attempt to help her or seek medical attention and he only contacted police when he had nowhere else to turn.'
The officer concluded that the sentence ensures Richens will 'face the consequences of his merciless actions.'
Context of Violence Against Women
This case highlights the ongoing issue of violence against women, a topic that has garnered significant attention in recent years. Campaigns like 'This Is Not Right' aim to address this national emergency, underscoring the need for continued awareness and action to protect women from such tragedies.
