Mother Appears in Court Following Tragic Death of Infant Daughter
The first photograph has emerged of a woman charged with murder after her 18-day-old daughter fell from a residential property in central London. Zahira Byjaouane, aged 43, faced Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where she spoke only to confirm her personal details during a brief hearing.
Case Deemed Too Serious for Magistrates’ Court
Byjaouane was not required to enter a plea, as the case was immediately transferred to the Old Bailey due to its severity. She is scheduled to appear at the higher court on Wednesday. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning at Horseferry Road in Westminster, following reports that an infant had fallen from a building.
Metropolitan Police officers responded to the scene, where the baby girl was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The London Ambulance Service confirmed that the infant received treatment on-site before being moved to a major trauma centre.
Forensic Investigation at Peabody Estate
Pictures from Saturday afternoon showed forensic officers working in a third-floor flat on the Peabody Estate, appearing to measure an open window. By Sunday morning, a police cordon had been lifted, and flowers along with a toy animal were left near the building as tributes.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell stated, ‘Our thoughts today are with the baby’s family. The death of an infant is always an extremely tragic occurrence, and officers are making urgent enquiries into the circumstances.’ She added, ‘At this stage, we believe the incident occurred within a domestic context, but we are appealing for anybody with information to come forward.’
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact events leading to this heartbreaking loss. The community has expressed shock and sorrow, with local residents leaving memorial items at the site to honor the young life cut short.
