Cambridgeshire Police have initiated a murder investigation after the tragic death of a three-month-old baby boy, Atijus Elertaite, who succumbed to a head injury earlier this month. The infant was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition on January 3, following an emergency call to a property in St John's Chase, March, Cambridgeshire, just after 11am.
Timeline of Events and Arrests
Atijus Elertaite passed away five days later on January 8, with a post-mortem examination preliminarily attributing his cause of death to a head injury, though further medical inquiries are pending. In connection with the case, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both residents of March, were initially arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) prior to the baby's death.
Re-arrests and Ongoing Investigation
On Thursday, the pair were re-arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody as the investigation intensifies. Detective Inspector Verity McCann expressed the force's condolences, stating, "We know the local community will be shocked and deeply saddened, and our thoughts remain with those affected by Atijus' death."
She emphasised the importance of avoiding speculation, particularly on social media, to prevent any interference with the ongoing inquiry. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling 101 and quoting incident 124 of January 3, or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
