Ricky Gervais has reportedly declined to participate in the BBC's 25th-anniversary celebration of The Office, dealing a significant blow to the network's plans. The 65-year-old comedian and co-creator of the iconic sitcom will instead produce his own anniversary special on YouTube, which will incorporate elements from his new Netflix animated series Alley Cats.
BBC Announces Reunion Without Gervais
The BBC recently confirmed that Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook will reunite for a one-off tribute to mark the quarter-century milestone of the show, which first aired in July 2001. The retrospective series Remembers will feature the duo sharing behind-the-scenes stories and reflecting on the show's legacy. However, neither Gervais nor co-creator Stephen Merchant are involved.
A source told The Sun: 'The BBC making a documentary about The Office without getting Ricky on board is a huge blow as it spoils their celebration somewhat. It just sums up his lack of allegiance towards the Beeb which has been drifting for some time now.'
Gervais' Representatives Cite Unavailability
Representatives for Gervais stated that he 'was not available' to take part in the BBC special, but added that he remains in contact with the BBC 'all the time about The Office.' Metro contacted the BBC, which had no comment on the matter.
Cast Memories and Behind-the-Scenes Tidbits
Despite Gervais' absence, fans will still hear about him during the special. Crook, who played office pedant Gareth, will share behind-the-scenes anecdotes, including how Gervais' on-set antics regularly threatened to derail filming. Freeman and Crook will discuss their memories of making the show in the early 2000s and reflect on its TV-defining legacy.
The episode synopsis reads: 'It's been more than 15 years since the pair last laid eyes on each other, but the groundbreaking comedy's 25th anniversary has brought them together once again.' They will also recall working with Lucy Davis, who played Tim's love interest Dawn.
Gervais' Alternative Anniversary Plans
Gervais' decision to create his own YouTube special tied to Alley Cats underscores his shifting priorities away from traditional broadcast television. The Office episode of Remembers will air Wednesday, July 8 at 10pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
