London's HMP Wandsworth is facing mounting pressure after admitting to another serious security failure, with police now hunting two escaped prisoners in a major embarrassment for the justice system.
The Category B prison, already under intense scrutiny following the escape of terror suspect Daniel Khalife just weeks earlier, confirmed that Basak Kucuk absconded from the facility on Saturday. The 33-year-old had been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing for serious fraud offences.
Pattern of Security Failures Emerges
This latest incident marks the second high-profile escape from the same prison in recent weeks, raising serious questions about operational procedures and security protocols at the troubled institution.
Kucuk's escape occurred despite the prison being on heightened alert following Khalife's dramatic September 6th breakout, which saw the former soldier allegedly strap himself to a delivery van to flee the premises.
Intensive Police Operation Underway
Metropolitan Police have launched a major manhunt for both escapees, with officers conducting extensive searches and appealing to the public for information.
"We are working closely with our colleagues in the prison service to locate Kucuk and return him to custody," a police spokesperson stated. "The public should not approach him but instead contact authorities immediately."
Prison Service Under Fire
The Ministry of Justice faces increasing criticism over the repeated security lapses at what should be one of London's most secure facilities.
A Prison Service spokesperson acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating: "We have initiated an urgent investigation into this incident and are working closely with the police to recapture the individual."
The back-to-back escapes have prompted calls for immediate intervention and comprehensive review of security measures at HMP Wandsworth, with many questioning how such breaches could occur in quick succession at a Category B establishment.
