A teenager has been charged with murder after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death on an east London towpath. Brayan David Saldarriaga, from Haringey, died on Monday evening after being found with fatal stab wounds near Hackney Marshes.
Incident Details
The fatal incident occurred on the May bank holiday following reports of a large gathering of people, some carrying machetes, according to the Metropolitan Police. The group was spotted on Towpath Walk, E9, at approximately 7.15pm. When emergency services arrived, they found Saldarriaga with stab wounds on Poplar Close. Despite paramedics' efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His family continues to be supported by specialist officers.
Arrest and Charge
A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Thursday and taken into police custody. He was charged with Saldarriaga's murder yesterday, along with possession of a bladed article. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court today.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card of the Metropolitan Police said: “Our thoughts remain with Brayan’s loved ones following this tragic incident. We understand the impact this incident has had on the local community.” She added: “If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to speak with one of our officers on patrol in the area this week.”
Appeal for Witnesses
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or recorded footage on their mobile phones to come forward. “Your information could be vital,” Card said. The investigation continues as officers patrol the area to reassure the community.
