A murder investigation is underway after a young man was stabbed to death in southeast London on New Year's Day.
Police Discover Victim With Chest Wounds
The Metropolitan Police were called to Grove Street in the Lewisham borough, near Rotherhithe, at approximately 12:35pm on Wednesday, 31 December 2025. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 23-year-old man who had suffered a stab wound to the chest.
Despite the rapid response from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist family liaison officers.
Investigation Progresses With No Arrests
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal stabbing. However, detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command are conducting urgent inquiries to establish the full circumstances.
A crime scene remains in place on Grove Street as forensic examinations continue. Detective Chief Inspector Sam Townsend, who is leading the investigation, stated: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time."
Increased Patrols to Reassure Community
Recognising the shock and concern such a violent incident causes, police have moved to reassure local residents. DCI Townsend added: "Our investigation is progressing swiftly... We understand that this will understandably cause concern within the local community. Please be assured that we have increased patrols in the area, and this investigation remains our highest priority."
The murder marks a tragic start to the new year for the Lewisham area, with officers appealing for any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward.
