Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery, a 37-acre Victorian burial ground in the London Borough of Lewisham, offers a shaded woodland walk with ornate monuments and a sense of calm, far from the city's bustle. Unlike the more famous Highgate Cemetery, this South London site remains underrated but equally charming for history and nature enthusiasts.
A Victorian Gem in Lewisham
Established in 1858, the cemetery originally comprised two separate grounds: Deptford Cemetery and Lewisham Cemetery, opened within a month of each other to relieve overcrowded churchyards. They merged in 1948, and Deptford was renamed Brockley Cemetery in 1965. The site is part of the Brockley Conservation Area.
Notable burials include poet Ernest Dowson, Great War poet and artist David Jones, educational reformer Margaret McMillan, and Elizabeth Watkins, the last recorded survivor of the Battle of Waterloo. Approximately 500 Commonwealth War Graves are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Nature and Wildlife
Mature trees provide ample shade, making the cemetery ideal for warm-weather walks. Winding paths lead past ivy-clad headstones and through natural grassland rich with wildflowers, where marbled white butterflies have been observed.
The Friends of Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries (FOBLC), a volunteer group formed in July 2007 with around 300 members, preserves the site. Their research has reunited families with ancestors, drawing relatives from as far as Australia and Canada. Guided walks are available on open days, and private tours can be arranged through the Friends.
Nearby Pub and Practical Information
After a walk, visitors can visit the Ladywell Tavern, a top-rated pub shortlisted for 'best-loved pub' in the 2026 Muddy Stiletto awards. It offers a sunny beer garden, lunch and dinner menus, and Sunday roasts in colder months.
