Hampstead Heath Cafe Opening Date Revealed After Controversial Daisy Green Takeover
Hampstead Heath Cafe Opening Date Revealed After Controversy

The popular Parliament Hill Café on Hampstead Heath, recently taken over by Daisy Green, is expected to open in two to three weeks after refurbishment delays. The café, located in the southeast corner of the heath, was originally slated to open this spring but faced hold-ups reportedly due to paperwork delays.

Background of the Takeover

Daisy Green won the contract for four cafés, including Parliament Hill, following a controversial retendering exercise by the City of London Corporation last year. The Corporation, which manages Hampstead Heath and Highgate Wood as a registered charity, faced severe criticism from customers who urged retaining the existing independent operators.

Controversy and Criticism

The Corporation defended the process as necessary to “ensure a high-quality visitor experience, offering welcoming community spaces that continue to meet the needs of local people.” Despite public backlash, Daisy Green, which runs venues in Kensington and the National Portrait Gallery, secured the contracts.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) revealed that Daisy Green had previously worked with consultants Davis Coffer Lyons (DCL), who oversaw the retendering. A Corporation spokesperson stated DCL was not involved in the outcome and its prior engagements did not constitute a conflict of interest. Hoxton Beach, which operates the Lido, Queen’s Park, and Highgate Wood cafés, is contesting its removal, though the D’Auria family vacated Parliament Hill earlier this year.

Refurbishment Progress

Little progress was visible until late May when fencing and workers appeared on site. The LDRS understands the late reopening, missing the Bank Holiday and warm weather, is due to paperwork delays. The Corporation confirmed the café will open in mid-June. Daisy Green did not respond to requests for comment.

Temporary Services

A food and drinks truck has been stationed next to the café to serve customers during refurbishment. Prue Freeman, co-founder of Daisy Green, previously expressed excitement about “creating wonderful spaces for all; serving delicious, locally sourced food and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.”
