Tower Hamlets Council has unveiled ambitious plans to convert long-vacant underground Victorian public toilets in Spitalfields into a sophisticated wine bar. The council is currently seeking planning approval to repurpose the historic facilities located at Leyden Street, aiming to revitalize a neglected area of the borough.

According to detailed proposals submitted to the council's planning department, the new wine bar is designed to attract business to an economically struggling locality within Tower Hamlets. The planning statement highlights that both the toilets and Leyden Street have been in a state of almost abandonment for some time. Heritage Preservation and Development Plans

Tower Hamlets Council, which owns the building, previously secured planning permission in 2022 to construct a café at ground level around the toilets' entrance. The current application seeks approval to change the use of the basement into a bar, arguing that this move would protect the building's heritage features and prevent it from falling into dilapidation.
